Are Your Judgments Costing You Business?

Filtered through our memories of good and bad past experiences, our judgments and evaluations happen in an instant. This happens subconsciously. I don’t think that we’re even aware to the depth of which our judgments control our actions. We’re always judging everything and everyone. And most of the time our preconceived notions and judgment are incorrect! When it comes to business networking our judgements and preconceived notions can really hurt us. Here is an example;Recall the last time you were driving and saw a cop in your rear view mirror. What when through your mind? Were you in reality driving ‘incorrectly’?

Just like the police in your rear view mirror, when you see someone you judge whether they’re fat, or thin, loud or quiet, attractive or ugly, and darn near anything else about them. Your mind is reacting to a sequence of responses that it’s been pre-conditioned to. Which may not be good at networking events. Here, I’m not talking about your intuitions and inner knowings. They’re always accurate. The issue is when we don’t listen to our ‘gut’ feelings. Well I don’t.

Here’s a personal example of how “seeing a cop” works. I really like Halle Berry. A physical attraction which has caused me problems in both my business and personal life. Whenever I meet someone that resembles ‘Halle Berry’, I ignore my intuition which usually goes something like this:’the outside maybe more attractive than the inside’. I’ve had financial and emotional costs to ignoring my intuition. A similar thing happen when we are repelled by someone. Sounding familiar to you?

Without even thinking we’ve made up our mind about the other person in three to four seconds. You’ve no doubt heard “You Never Get A Second Chance to Make a First Impression”. There’s some truth to it. The problem is that we have little control over how we are perceived by others regardless of how we dress, look or present ourselves. Our perceptions of other people are all that we have control over.

Here is the bottom line for your business. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover or a business networking partner (power partner) either.
