South Florida Residence Wants Markoff Back For Air & Sea Show
The Fort Lauderdale air show which was planned for April 24-25, the promised resurrection of 1 of South Florida’s most popular events, was canceled.Air show would-be producer Stan Smith said Monday he’s run out of time and doesn’t have enough money. Only if an “angel” sponsor materialized Monday or Tuesday could he use it.
“It’s very sad to use up all your time,” Smith said. “Everyone wanted it to occur. It’s that at the conclusion of the day, nobody knows how to cash.”
Smith said among the hardships he faced was securing a $2million bond the town of Fort Lauderdale required. The bond would pay the location its estimated $500,000 to $600,000 in costs, plus spend on any property damage, if Smith couldn’t pay. But Smith couldn’t receive the bond, he needed anyone to co-sign for his new operation.
Smith was trying to retrieve the air show prominent by Mickey Markoff. The show ended following a 13-year run in Fort Lauderdale when Markoff lost his key sponsor. Smith’s show, Air Lauderdale Beach Fest, could have been smaller along with a bit diverse from Markoff’s show.
Smith planned to charge an entry fee at the best viewing locations. And the man didn’t have typically the most popular air act, the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds fighter jets that shocked and awed the crowds. He had enlarged the region in which the festival would occur, and planned an environmentally friendly Village, a Politics Village, a Thank the Troops Zone, live music, etc.
Smith said he necessary to cancel the show now from fairness to anyone who might spend some time or money on the program, and then have it not stop.
Smith had no experience gaining a show with this magnitude. A public relations consultant, he previously worked for H. Wayne Huizenga.
This story is his “final plea towards the community.” He explained he needs “just one million dollars” but wouldn’t say how much, from your title sponsor or an amount of sponsors, in order to save the show.
