Is there a private beach in Kauai that is only open to members of the military?
DMarie83 asked:
My husband and I are preparing to go to Kauai when he gets back from his deployment. Someone told him that there is a great beach that is only open to the military. I’ve been doing some research on the best beaches etc and I’ve never run across it…does anyone know about it?

Check with the MWR for the base on Kauai – often they have cabins for rent right on the base & they are really cheap. I think the base on Kauai is and they have cabins on Barking Sands Beach – there is a link for the cabin rental form on that linked page. I’ve never been to Kuaai, but the MWR at Camp Pendleton CA had something similar right on the beach and I think it is pretty common on military bases.

According to state law, the public must have access to all shores in Hawaii. From a legal point of view, there are no private beaches in Hawaii. However, some of them are more easily accessed by public access points and walking along the shore than others.

I lived there when I was a kid. It’s called Barking Sands – it’s actually a missile launching site that is managed by Sandia Labs but is also a military facility. It is a gorgeous beach and the sand actually barks when you run on it. I hope it’s still as cool as it was 25 years ago.
