KITV covers “Discover Kauai” on youtube

ViralKauai asked:

A July 15, 2007 television news piece on the success of a youtube video called “Discover Kauai.” The short film sparked local controversy on the Hawaiian island of Kauai by speaking what is unspeakable in a society dependent on the tourism dollar: that there are serious flaws in this island paradise, most notably runaway development. Paving over Paradise is, in fact, BAD for not only for tourism, but for everyone who lives on Kauai — for Native Hawaiians, for long-time residents, and for …

It is beautiful for now, but if development continues of those million dollar plus homes and condos it won’t stay beautiful long. I agree with the original video — it needs to be stopped or slowed down.

We’ve been there to vacation and it’s obvious that the locals are suffering the consequences of the tourist industry. Who is getting rich of this? Not the locals I bet. I’d be angry too.

We need to start just ignoring the nonsense haoles disseminate throughout our lives. Just ignore them and move towards the betterment of our families, lands, Kupuna, and souls. no need extended debates about whether tourist are good for us. Their not. Just ignore them and try to find ways to full fill our kuleana and responsibilities to our lands and Kupuna. Eventually haole arrogance will get whats coming to it. In the mean time…find ways to not replicate their colonial mentalities.

How dumb can you get? Kauai depends on tourism now that the sugar plantation has closed down. FYI, HAOLE = Foreigner. So, unless you full blooded hawaiian you’re haole too. I suggest some economic classes before trying to put your two cents into Hawaiian politics. Its not the tourists you should get mad at, its your government. The people you voted for that are turning a blind eye to make some money. Where you think the money to clean up Polihale after the land slide came from? Educate yourself.

Thats a pity. I mean the island is so beautiful with a lot of nature. Everybody who has the privilege to live there should be very thankful and appreciate it.

Typical Haole talk. SHADAP and GET OFF.
The most common reason Haoles come to kauai:

“We really felt the spirit of the island when we first came here for a vacation. The island called to us and we wanted to be a part of the island and get away from all the problems in the mainland.”

    GIVE ME A BREAK!

If it wasnt for the haoles, most of the locals would be living much worse than they are now. Locals should understand that this is a county in the state of Hawaii in the USA. We haoles have as much right to the place as you. So get use to it or move to another country. You should also be thanking the US Navy for all they do for the island. Wake up and become part of the real world.

I feel sorry for the residents I was there and saw hardly any locals and lots of traffic…I would be mad if I was a local!

I didn’t think the traffic was bad at all when I was there on New Years, it’s not like it was bumper to bumper or anything. I don’t think tourism should be banned or anything after all the economy depends on it, but the rich people living there is horrible, the natives should be the only ones that live there, but this isn’t a perfect world.

We are visiting Hawaii / Kauai in May, thank you for letting us know about the traffic jams so we can plan ahead, seriously we don’t mind the traffic jams and over development in housing estates. (we live in Sydney Australia). I am sure we can still find somewhere which still has the touch of nature in Kauai. It is only bad for the residents there who has to suffer this issue.

okay first of all the way that it is in LA is about the same as in OAHU…kauai is a different island because of the fact that the island only has 2 lanes…one going north and east and one going south and west…oahu on the other hand has freeways and the traffic is dead stop for at least 5 minutes..

Depends on the time of day how long it takes to get through Kapaa. One time without an accident it took 1.5 hours just to get from Kealia Beach just to the other side of Kapaa at Haleilio Rd at the shell station just to make my turn home.

Thanx.. I didn’t know how to spell haoles. :) I’m a haole and I agree. Haoles should only be allowed to visit at the discretion of native Hawaiians.

All this is true because the government officials are ******. Things like SUNSET KAHILI, POIPU SHORES, SHERATON KAUAI, etc., etc., are abominations.
