Aloha! Kauai is very pretty and quiet. Not much night life but allot of time for relaxing. The last time I was there I was in Poipu Beach Area and went to 2 great little restaurants one was called Suzi’s Cafe and it was this ladies house. She would walk up to your table and tell you what the special was and if you did not want that she would make you whatever you wanted it was really good. The other restaurant was called The Kohola Broiler (I think) it was a good place to eat also, kinda of a do it yourself grill and BBQ place. Since you said your husband does not like flying, if you could convince him to take a helicopter ride it will be worth it. The island has some great scenery from above. You can also try a sailing dinner cruise but try to stay away from the motorized boats. When I go to the islands I always take a Catamaran sailing cruise, the boat is small which means less people and it only cost a few dollars more than the big cattle call motorized boats. Good Luck. Stay away from Poipu. The south shore is so overdeveloped and comercialized.

For the true spirit of Aloha try the north shore. It is lush, green and beautiful. Waterfalls on the makua side and the deep blue pacific on the makai side. Try Hanalei. It is a sleepy little town with incredible restaurants. Try Postcards, excellent seafood and vegetarian dishes. Drop in to the Old Hanalei School House for bloody marys that are out of this world! The best i’ve ever had! Go to their farmer’s market on Saturdays and Tuesdays. You’ll get the freshest fruit anywhere, and you might even try some hanalei fudge! delicious!

Also try the Princeville area. It is a little more resort like, with manicured lawns and golf courses, but it still encompasses the beauty of Kauai. Try staying at the Hanalei Bay Resort. They share a beach with the Princeville Hotel (the only resorts on the north shore that are on a beach) with rooms at 1/3 the price. Their Restaurant Bali Hai is excellent and a romantic place to go for the sunsets. They have live music on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

It is also a short walk away to the Queen’s Bath. It is a lava pool that fills up with water and fish at high tide, and remains full at low tide. Great for swimming!

If you are on a budget, try the Kapaa area (the east shore). With many resorts there, the competition and the prices are great. Many shopping centers, places to see, and even a safeway. Go to Hula Girl at the Coconut Grove Marketplace for excellent sushi and $3 mai tais that melt your stress away. The coconut grove marketplace has a free hula show on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Lydgate park nearby is the place for kids. A great jungle gym and playground, plus a protected reef for safe swimming and snorkeling. Fern grotto is also nearby, and the Smith family does an excellent job of entertaining you.

Try Captain Andy’s for a dinner cruise. Great food and drinks, plus an excellent crew. We’ve spotted manta rays, spinner dolphins, turtles and flying fish on our cruises.

BTW – You can drive from one end of the island to the other in 1 1/2 hours, so if you want to go to the south shore or even waimea canyon, you can.

But definately stay away from Poipu.

There is the Hawaii Superferry that goes to diffrent islands! Now, I haven’t been to kauai, only to Oahu (six times), but I imagine there is lots to do and see there! The botanical gardens I have heard are really beautiful!

Part of the charm of Kauai is that there really isn’t that much to do there besides sit back and enjoy the calm of nature.

You should definately check out the Fern Grotto tour (now that I believe it’s up and running again) and then Waimea Canyon (for Hawaii’s version of the Grand Canyon in the wettest spot in the US).

After that, you’ll have to relax and enjoy each other’s company because there’s really nothing else to do.

    Happy travels and happy anniversary!

Inter-island flights are not long (20-30 mins max). I suggest you tell your husband to get a prescription for anxiety. Taking a boat to other islands takes longer & you get motion sickness. Kauai is a good choice, were actually going there next week :)

we live on O’ahu, but were island hopping.

    Happy upcoming 15th Anniversary.

I love Kauai and I think it is a great destination to celebrate an anniversary. I too love the Princeville area. It is very romantic with the velvet green cliffs and waterfalls. The swank Princeville resort does have a special offer going on right now (link is below), but one thing to bear in mind is that the resort is currently undergoing rennovations, My husband and I stayed at this very nice condo that is just next door to the Princeville. They are called the Puu Poa condos and are rented out individually. We stayed in unit 409 which was wonderful! We found the one we stayed in via.

The Beach House Restaurant in Poipu is awesome and a perfect spot for a romantic sunset dinner.

As far as the new superferry service, unfortunately, you can’t day trip with it. It will only go from Oahu to Maui and Oahu to Kauai once daily. But you might consider doing an overnight trip to Oahu and see Pearl Harbor and the Mighty Mo.

As for things to do in Kauai….
    - Hiking is awesome…try the first 2 miles of the kalalua trail along the Na Pali Coast. There are also some great trails around Waimea Canyon (Be sure to wear mosquito repellant!)
    - Tubing
    - Ziplining
    - Horseback Riding
    - Someone already mentioned the fern grotto…yes it is making a comeback, which is great.
    - Golf
    - Spa
    - Snorkel, Snuba, or Diving

Hope you have a wonderful time!

    Hi Jordan,

I live on Kauai and know the island fairly well. I think the first thing you should do is buy Kauai Revealed by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. You can get a taste of what the book is like by checking out. You can also order the book on their website or just get it at Barnes & Noble or Borders.

I don’t recommend island-hopping if you only have a week here. Too much packing and unpacking and waiting in airports! Just stay on Kauai for the full seven days and really try to see the island. It’s beautiful!
